Summary:
It is difficult to mention Wimbledon without reference to tennis – for the best part of 100 years it has been known worldwide as the home of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. For one fortnight a year, Wimbledon lives and breathes tennis, for the rest of the year there is fresh air, trees, green space and wooded expanse stretching as far as Putney Vale. This south-west suburb of London with its good rail links to the City has something to offer everyone but, of course, it's at a price.
Properties:
Wimbledon Village has elegant shops, trendy boutiques, bars and restaurants and the surrounding roads offer grand Victorian family homes in smart, tree-lined streets. There are 3 bed terraces and modern flats near the town centre as well as 1930's semis and new town houses. Large Victorian and Edwardian family homes are also to be found in the wide leafy roads between Wimbledon Common and Wimbledon Park including those with swimming pools. Properties overlooking the green open expanse of the Common command the higher prices. South Wimbledon sees the tightly packed roads of smaller Victorian and Edwardian terraces and there are modern apartments and luxury lifestyle flats such as those that dominate Wimbledon Hill Road. Raynes Park, sometimes known as West Wimbledon, boasts many wide, tree-lined streets with two-bed Edwardian cottages and three-bed terraced houses. There are new 2-3 bed and 3-4 bed family houses as well as conversions and new blocks of flats. Merton boasts one of the first garden suburbs, Merton Park Estate, where many homes have large gardens. Merton also has large Victorian 5 bedroomed family houses, later Edwardian cottages and villas and more recent developments of flats and houses.
Buyers:
Loyal, long-term local families compete for big family homes. City professionals and internationals look here for investment. Middle class families seek homes with more open space than that on offer in Clapham or Fulham.
