Summary:
On the southern bank of the river Thames, the area is the cultural heart of London, with theatres, galleries, and concert halls - recent additions include the Oxo Tower, Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge. Southbank takes in several parts of the Docklands, as well as Borough, Newington, Elephant and Castle and Waterloo. A large and diverse area with a mix of public, commercial and private building of every kind, and with a population to match.
Properties:
Since the 1990's, over 9000 private sector homes have been completed in SE1, including new build and conversions of public buildings, offices and factories. The riverside Docklands developments include expensive apartments converted from former warehouses and offices, providing luxury living for city professionals and attracting international buyers. Whole houses are rare, loft conversions and purpose built flats plentiful. Inland from the river, there is a choice of attractive Georgian town houses, particularly around Borough, with many converted into flats. Waterloo has pleasant narrow streets of Victorian cottages together with the occasional Georgian Square tucked between council build. The ugly Elephant and Castle council blocks are soon to disappear as plans to radically develop the area take shape. SE1 has invested heavily in new social housing, shared ownership and fair rent homes for locals.
Buyers:
Wealthy city professionals and internationals attracted to Dockland living. First-time buyers for the plentiful flats. Ordinary working-class local people.
