Streatham area guide
Postcodes:
SW2, SW16
Boroughs:
Lambeth, Wandsworth
National Rail:
Streatham, Streatham Common, Streatham Hill
Summary:
Streatham in the London borough of Lambeth has smartened up its act since being voted the scruffiest High Road in Britain. Council and private investment in the area's regeneration began in earnest at the turn of this century with the refurbishment of Streatham Green and major renovation of the High Road. This sprucing up has led to the opening of smart bars and restaurants and Streatham’s new image is helping to attract young Londoners into the area. The population of Streatham is racially mixed, with middle class families occupying the better houses in leafy streets and lower income families and asylum seekers in council estate housing.
Properties:
Mainly a residential family area with several open green spaces such as Streatham Common, Tooting Bec and Telford Park. The area boasts a large amount of good quality housing, the nicest of which tends to be around the commons. Attractive Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses, 1930's style suburban terraces and apartment blocks, and semi-detached family houses. Detached homes and larger semis can be found off the High Road. There are council housing estates in the area, particularly towards the south of Streatham High Road, though these tend to be well maintained. A plentiful supply of conversions, flats and ex-council properties for the first-time buyer.
Buyers:
Increasingly popular with many middle class professionals, families and first-time buyers. Hunting ground for those who cannot afford Clapham’s rising prices. Multi ethnic inner London suburb with many people on low incomes.
