Summary:

Stoke Newington, in the London borough of Hackney, retains its village character with a generous amount of open spaces, such as Clissold Park and Stoke Newington Common. The Stoke Newington West Reservoir Centre provides excellent water sports and outdoor facilities and there is even a wildlife nature reserve in the making. Stoke Newington's fortunes changed in the early 19th century when impressive Victorian houses were built to provide homes for London's expanding population of successful businessmen. Today high property prices in neighbouring Islington has added to Stoke Newington's attraction, as city workers and their families seek better value for money. Over the last 20 years, smart new shops, restaurants and bars have increased its trendy reputation and popularity amongst white middle-class professionals, particularly teachers and those working in the media. Stoke Newington is a racially mixed area, with large Jewish and Afro-Caribbean communities.

Properties:

A wide variety of properties, from imposing 4 storey Victorian houses, modern flat conversions and lofts to modest 2-3 bed family houses and ex-council properties. The larger Victorian/Edwardian properties as you head north towards Finsbury Park and Clissold Park and those with park views command the higher prices. Popular with young families are the quiet tree-lined streets of mid-to-late-Victorian terraces, many of which have been converted into flats. Interspersed are blocks of refurbished 1930's and modern purpose built flats, as well as 1 and 2 bed flats offering housing association accommodation.

Buyers:

The area is popular with young families looking for better value for money and attracted by good schooling. Professionals – many working in the teaching profession and the media.
