Summary:
Southgate's development as a suburban residential area took a new direction in the 1930's when large, semi-detached houses were built. Improved rail and road links soon led to a building frenzy and by the end of the decade the area was almost fully developed. A solid, respectable and prosperous area, close enough for commuters to the city and within sniffing distance of the fresh air of green belt land. Palmers Green has the beautiful Broomfield Park at its centre covering 500 acres of recreational space.
Properties:
This salubrious area boasts a wealth of large family homes set in wide, leafy streets. To the centre of Southgate, large Victorian terraces and cottages predominate. Grander Edwardian and large mid-war semi-detached houses, some half-timbered, spread across suburbia creating an attractive mix of solid and respectable homes. Large modern detached houses and smart flats fill in the available spaces. Palmers Green, too, is a leafy, residential suburb popular with families. Large Victorian terraced houses with big gardens and grand Edwardian 3 to 5 bed-roomed homes, some converted into apartments. Further from the town centre, mid-war semis dominate as well as smaller Victorian housing.
Buyers:
Good local schools attract predominantly well off middle class families. Palmers Green has the largest Cypriot community outside Cyprus. Cheaper than Southgate, and a good hunting ground for flat seekers, first time buyers and the buy-to-let market.
