Summary:

Shepherd's Bush - shepherds on their way to market would find it difficult today to find a green resting place for their flock. The area lacks trees and greenery and large gardens are scarce. The population has expanded into a colourful mix of races, each ethnic group stamping its own identity on the shops and amenities available. To the north, the BBC has a large and expanding presence at White City and there is the Wormwood Scrubs area, famous for its prison. The district occupies a central location just west of Holland Park and Notting Hill, and there are good transport links to the city.

Properties:

Street after street of solid Victorian terraced housing, Edwardian maisonettes and flat conversions at reasonable prices attract first time buyers. Mid-war low rise blocks of flats and small semi-detached houses can also be found, such as The Flower model village - council built but now privately owned and fast losing its 'ex-council' image. To the west, Wendell Park boasts larger 3 and 4 bedroom Victorian family homes in tree-lined streets - though they are very much in the minority. North of Wendell Park are mansion block flats, purpose-built Edwardian maisonettes and smaller Victorian houses. Many of the Victorian terraces here have been converted into flats. Further north, the condition of the housing stock gets progressively shabbier, especially around Wormwood Scrubs. Council estate housing can be found around Westway and the massive retail complex at White City, as well as the BBC's 'media village'. There are several small new housing developments.

Buyers:

Professional people and city workers find Shepherd's Bush a cheaper alternative to its more prestigious neighbours. Those BBC workers who can afford it occupy the larger family homes. Private and council-owned homes give the area a very diverse mix, both in terms of race and income.
