Summary:

Putney and Roehampton sit south of the river Thames in the borough of Wandsworth. Putney, famous for its numerous rowing clubs, has been the starting point for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race since 1845. About six miles from central London, Putney is a solid, respectable, middle class suburb with good schools and access to a wealth of pleasant open parklands. It has excellent shopping, and plenty of good restaurants and bars. Roehampton has access to the same facilities, but doesn't quite have the x-factor enjoyed by Putney.

Properties:

Putney's traditional housing stock is made up large late-Victorian and Edwardian houses in pleasant tree-lined roads. West Putney is the place to live and the grand houses here are for the very well-heeled. On the riverside, elegant mansion blocks fringe the Thames and there is a plentiful supply of smart conversions and modern apartment blocks. Slightly cheaper terraced houses and flats can be found in East Putney. The best part of Roehampton is the village, with its charming period and Victorian terraced cottages, pretty mews houses, and larger late Victorian terraces. South of Roehampton Hospital, can be found grand semi and detached houses dating back to Edwardian as well as 1930s, many of which are now flat conversions. There is a good choice of ex-council homes that have now shaken off their public sector image. Smart security-gated developments can be found around Putney Bridge Road.

Buyers:

Middle-class families are drawn to Putney because of its good schools, green open spaces and excellent amenities. SW15 attracts young professionals and couples because of its proximity to the city centre. Buy-to-let in Roehampton offers accommodation for local students.
