Summary:
The district of Poplar in the East End has had mixed fortunes since it housed dockland workers in Victorian England. World War II left its mark, with a heavy loss of life and building stock. An industrial wasteland in the 1980's, it was not until the revolutionary development of the Docklands that Poplar found itself on the property map. Its territory has seen a number of border changes as the Isle of Dogs and developing Limehouse encroach on its boundaries. The hive of construction and regeneration activity has resulted in a major commercial centre created around Canary Wharf with marinas, leisure amenities and luxury homes.
Properties:
Predominant housing in traditional Poplar is council or ex-council dwellings, largely 2-3 bedroomed flats, maisonettes, and terraced housing, as well as 4-storey and tower blocks. However, house and flat regeneration of existing properties has produced a good stock of smart flats and houses both private and council owned. Luxury can be found in the new canal-side schemes and modern developments of both flats and town houses as well as warehouse conversions. The odd fine Georgian house still exists in Poplar's conservation areas.
Buyers:
Perhaps not as smart or sophisticated as its well-known neighbours but good transport links are attracting middle class professionals and city workers to its new luxury homes.
