Summary:
Deptford is on the south bank of the River Thames, just 3 miles from the city and once home to Henry VIII's naval yard. Famous for its noted inhabitants of bygone days – Christopher Marlowe was said to have met his death here, and the area also lays claim to a young Jools Holland and the group Dire Straits. There is a healthy music and arts scene still, and bohemians north of the river look to Deptford in search of kindred spirits. Deptford has a busy street market and lively High Street. Quieter areas can be found around the conservation area of Telegraph Hill in New Cross and the hill offers excellent views across London from the hilltop park.
Properties:
In the streets to the south of New Cross Road, are the large, bay fronted Victorian terraces, making good flat conversions, and the better residential homes around leafy Telegraph Hill. Here there are also new developments of small blocks of flats. On New Cross Road itself there are some purpose-built blocks of mansion flats. There is a smaller, less attractive area of terraced housing north of New Cross Road and west of New Cross Gate Station. Improvements in transport links have led to much activity in the area and it is increasingly attractive to commuters, especially from the Docklands. Deptford is in the process of being improved and new housing developments, much of it council housing, offer new flats in low-rise blocks. It is scheduled for more redevelopment, involving the construction of over 3,000 new homes.
Buyers:
First time buyers as well as buy-to-let landlords. Commuters from the Docklands as well as the city. Very mixed area which is traditionally working and now with many students because of Goldsmith's College and University of Greenwich.
