Morden, Mitcham and Colliers Wood area guide

Postcodes:

SW19

Boroughs:

Merton

Summary:

Morden, Mitcham and Colliers Wood in the borough of Merton are less salubrious areas than their neighbour, Wimbledon. It has its fair share of congested roads and pockets that are frayed at the edges. However, a continuing programme of improved transport links is gradually transforming this wide spread of suburbia for the better as commuters seek convenient homes and value for money. Morden in general is a green, leafy, residential area with open space, including Morden Hall Park with over 50 acres of National Trust Parkland. Mitcham too has its green spaces, with Cricket Green conservation area at its heart - it has to some extent managed to retain a rural atmosphere. Colliers Wood is rising to the challenge of keeping up with its neighbours and this area too is sprucing up its patch.

Properties:

Property in the borough covers a wide range of style and prices. All three areas have large estates of 1930's terraces. Morden is dominated by the vast St Helier council estate, and is a plentiful source of respectable two and three bed 1930's semis, popular with first time buyers seeking good value for money. Mitcham is dominated by ex-council properties, mid-war semis, together with some Victorian terraces. The most sought-after properties are in the conservation area around Commonside East and the streets around the old Cricket Green. Colliers Wood still retains some streets of Victorian terraces, together with mid-war semis and council blocks, and is a good hunting ground for cheap conversions. One bed-roomed starter homes can be found throughout all three areas.

Buyers:

Local families and first-time buyers. Good-sized, value-for-money properties as well as opportunities to climb the first rung of the ladder.
