Summary:
Marylebone, in the centre of London, is sandwiched between the busy shops of Oxford Circus and the green open spaces of Regent's Park. In the heart of the West End, this well-established area is jam packed with tourist sights, theatres, shops, restaurants, bars and city street entertainment. The commercial and professional world also call it home, with period properties long since taken over by offices and consulting rooms - Harley Street being one of its most famous addresses. Whilst all this activity takes up a good deal of space, there is still a surprising number of residential properties to be found and the area's regained status as a fashionable place to live has fast made W1 a property hot spot. Its neighbour, Fitzrovia, is far less assuming; it is home to the rag trade and has a bohemian flavour - prices here are the lowest you will find in W1.
Properties:
Most residents in Marylebone are flat dwellers, homes range from small studios to company extravagance, housed in red brick mansion block conversions, as well as 1930's and 1960's developments. There are individual houses, but they are few and far between. Elegant period houses converted into spacious apartments can be found around the busy high street and a number of mews homes sit prettily in quiet cobbled lanes. The area is still largely privately owned - lease length of any property affecting its price. In Fitzrovia, there is a mix of residential/commercial property, cheaper than can be found in Marylebone. Although the area is up-and-coming, it still offers some of the best value for money in W1.
Buyers:
The more wealthy professionals and internationals. Foreign executives and their families. W1 is home to many diplomats and embassy staff.
