Lewisham and Catford area guide
Postcodes:

Boroughs:
Lewisham
National Rail:
Brockley, Lewisham, St Johns, Catford, Catford Bridge, Ladywell
Summary:
The Docklands Light Railway has brought about major changes to this area as young business and professional people are now in easier commuter distance from the city and Docklands. Its accessibility also means that middle-class families too can now overspill from the more expensive property areas on its borders, such as Greenwich and Dulwich. Lewisham has a number of large council built estates and the area is therefore predominantly working class. However, much investment and refurbishment has created some very attractive housing and improvements to facilities such as Lewisham's extensive central shopping area are steadily bringing about its transformation into a very desirable place to live.
Properties:
Lewisham's conservation areas contain many elegant period properties; large Victorian terraced houses, grand 7-bedroomed villas some with conservatories. The most attractive areas are the streets around Lewisham Park. Brockley and Crofton Park in SE4 boast large, period housing, pleasant open spaces and a quiet suburban atmosphere. Throughout the area there are smatterings of 1920's and 1930's suburban housing, as well as new developments such as the security-gated complex of Harley Gardens.
Catford has laid-out, uniform grid-pattern streets of 19th century properties ranging from 3 to 6 bedroomed houses. Many of the larger properties have been converted into spacious flats, although there is now a trend to restore to their original intention – family homes for professionals. There are also 1920's and 1930's semi-detached houses in large gardens. Catford's popular estates are well-preserved and much sought after. First-time buyers must now look further south to areas such as Hither Green for more affordable housing stock - here you will find smaller 2/3 storey Victorian terraces.
Buyers:
Once considered by city workers as too far from London, Lewisham and Catford have become popular with young professionals and middle-class families. Buyers here can get more for their money.
