Summary:
Kentish Town in N5 covers a mixed area encompassing large council housing estates as well as some elegant Victorian homes popular with middle class, professional people. The area closer to its neighbours, Highgate and Hampstead, is particularly sought after, for obvious reasons. Kentish Town has benefited as an overflow area for those unable to aspire to Hampstead or Highgate prices. As well as its closeness to the lovely open spaces of the Heath, this part of NW7 offers good local schools and excellent transport links to the city - just 3 miles away. To the east, Tufnell Park in N7 is also a mixed area in terms of property and population. Along with the very attractive streets offering spacious private accommodation, there are the sprawling council estates and the famous Holloway prison for women.
Properties:
Kentish Town's most elegant and attractive homes lie in Dartmouth Park and around Highgate Road - wide streets with large Victorian houses, many on steep hills, imposing 4 storey Victorian town houses and streets with 2 storey, semi-detached, Victorian villas. West Kentish Town has its share of municipal housing, both estates and tower blocks, but there are streets that include un-modernised Victorian terraced housing and here bargain hunters have assisted the council in regenerating and improving the area. Some of Tufnell Park's wide, tree-lined streets are graced with huge, mid-Victorian house, some more elegant than others. Most of the detached houses and big semi-s are split into both small and very large flats and there are some mid 20th century smaller terraced houses.
Buyers:
Many of the larger houses in the most sought-after streets are occupied by professional middle-class families. There are ex-council homes available for first-time buyers. Young artistic, bohemian types attracted to the area because of its proximity to Camden Town.
