Summary:
Improved transport links began Islington's transformation in the 1960's from a decidedly deprived area of London to an up-and-coming destination for well-heeled city dwellers. The area divides roughly into three parts; The Angel, Canonbury and Barnsbury, with Highbury to the north. With its trendy bars, restaurants and plentiful housing stock, the area has become a favoured location of city workers. However, Islington's chic and glamour goes hand-in-hand with its large-scale council estates and the inevitable traffic congestion of this overcrowded suburb.
Properties:
The area offers a wealth of fine Georgian and Victorian houses. The Angel has been a hot spot for new developments, with large warehouse conversions becoming increasingly smart. Canonbury has a number of elegant Georgian houses together with early and mid-Victorian housing in attractive areas. Barnsbury boasts elegant squares with smart terraces. Property in Highbury is generally cheaper than in neighbouring Canonbury and Barnsbury with predominantly Victorian housing ranging from 1 bed conversions to large multi-bedroomed family houses overlooking Highbury Fields. Smaller, terraced properties surround the famous Arsenal football ground, and flats and conversions are plentiful with several new developments to the east around Drayton Park.
Buyers:
Proximity to the City, its trendy and vibrant atmosphere, and its character Georgian and Victorian homes in picturesque settings makes this suburb an obvious attraction to professionals, city workers, media types, lawyers. Islington has embraced those priced out of the more expensive London areas, as well as those looking to invest in smart new flats.
