Summary:

Highgate in N6 is high on a hill, just east of Hampstead Heath - an ancient village which has long been a highly sought-after location, conveniently situated just 4 miles from the city. Residents enjoy facilities such as Hampstead Heath, Highgate Woods, as well as the extensive grounds of Kenwood House, an impressive Adam mansion, and the rural atmosphere is treasured in this part of London. Highgate Village itself is a traditional old village - a property hunting ground for millionaires. The high street has smart individual shops, gourmet restaurants, cafes and bars, although today's constant traffic is an unwelcome addition. The village is surrounded by lovely homes in tree-lined streets and with views to match.

Properties:

Although there is a scattering of earlier housing, 18th century and some 1680s, Victorian properties and terraces dominate the area. There are some 1930s built semis, as well as more recent modest suburban housing and a number of converted and purpose-built blocks of private flats. The most prestigious and expensive part is around the village itself with town houses, grand mansions in vast grounds, gated properties and private estates. There is little scope for new build.

Buyers:

Predominantly families, as one agent put it "a base for local people with money who move within the area", as well as a sought-after location by well-heeled foreigners, media folk, and musicians. Popular with professional couples, single people and commuters to the city.
