Summary:

The centre of Greenwich is about 3 miles east of Tower Bridge and lies immediately across the River Thames from the Isle of Dogs. Greenwich is synonymous with the Royal Navy, Greenwich Meantime, the Ministry of Defence and, of course, the Millennium Dome – its most famous landmark of recent years. Greenwich boasts an abundance of museums, historical buildings and elegant architecture making it a year round hot spot for tourists.

Its neighbour, Blackheath, is indeed a 'heath', high and windy at that, with fine views of the capital. Blackheath's heart is still best described as an elegant Georgian suburb, with smart terraces in smart streets. It is jointly managed by Lewisham and Greenwich councils who succeed in preserving the area's historic glory and at the same time meeting the need for both private and public housing. Greenwich is 15 minutes away from London Bridge by train, Blackheath to London Bridge, 12 minutes.

Properties:

The most prestigious area is West Greenwich, west of the Park. Its beautiful 18th and early 19th century terraces are set in well-kept, attractive streets, giving the area a village like atmosphere. Most properties in the centre of Greenwich are owned by the Ministry of Defence and here flats, at reasonable rates, can sometimes become available to rent. The residential area of Westcombe Park boasts a cluster of tree-lined streets of small terraced family houses, as well as 3 and 4 bed-roomed houses, and it is a good buyers' hunting ground with its good mix of homes. There are 2 and 3 storey Victorian/Edwardian houses, as well as 1930s homes and flat conversions. More modern properties along the North Greenwich Peninsular, beside the Dome, offer new owners the chance to join a new community that enjoys the pleasures of an historic riverside home. There are also some council houses around Creek Road and Norman Road.

In Blackheath, many of the early 18th century houses are now smart 2 and 3 bedroom flat conversions and the area also boasts one of the smarter council-built housing estates in Britain. Blackheath Park is a mixture of styles dating from the early 19th century. Here you will find opulence (mansions with swimming pools), 1930s detached, some 1960s estates, a good mix of private/public houses and some converted flats.

Buyers:

Greenwich and Blackheath are becoming more attractive places to live since the success of The Docklands and the area's improved transport links, making them both ideal places from which to commute. Professional people as well as blue-collar workers give the areas a down-to-earth feel, despite the elegant buildings and grand surroundings.
