Summary:

Eltham in SE9 stands on a high sandy plateau with fine views and the area comes under the tender care of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Its elevated position made it an obvious strategic site for building the famous Eltham Palace, a favourite residence of Henry VIII and still a major tourist attraction today. One of its favourite sons is Bob Hope and W G Grace played cricket for the Eltham Cricket Club. An attractive suburb, Eltham has many open green spaces, with lovely walks, woods and parks, making it hard to believe its proximity to the city. Housing Development led to the creation of New Eltham to the south, and its close neighbour Mottingham, on the borders of Greenwich and the Borough of Bromley, was historically farmland until the arrival of the railway in 1866.

Properties:

Families are attracted to Eltham for its closeness to Greenwich as well as the Kent countryside. Largely Edwardian and mid-war suburban housing - 4 bedroomed family homes, semi-detached and terraced. Developments of large executive houses can be found heading east to Oxleas.

Whilst Victorian housing grace the streets in parts of Mottingham, Woolwich Council, before its merger with Greenwich in the 60's, oversaw the building of Mottingham’s large housing estates, such as Coldharbour to the east of Mottingham Road. More recent developments, however, have been limited to small-scale housing on brown field sites.

Buyers:

Good transport links make this suburban area popular with commuters. Middle class city workers, both professional and blue-collar, are attracted by its open green spaces and countryside feel.
