Crouch End and Stroud Green area guide

Summary:

Crouch End is an area of north London, in the London Borough of Haringey. Both Stroud Green and Crouch End are middle-class suburbs with a village feel. Crouch End is located in a valley between Haringey to the east, Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Wood Green to the north, Finsbury Park and Archway to the south and Highgate to the west. The town centre is busy, with many shops and restaurants. A large number of open green spaces give the area a green aspect. To the immediate west, it is bounded by Highgate Woods, and the adjacent Queen's Wood, as well as a large expanse of playing fields. To the North is Alexandra Park and to the south Finsbury Park. 'The Parkland Walk', a former railway line, connects these two parks and is now London's longest local nature reserve. Stroud Green lies between Finsbury Park and Crouch End. The area is not widely known. Stroud Green station closed in 1954, but the area has remained popular.

Properties:

Property in the area would originally have been larger Edwardian houses, although the majority were converted into flats during the 1980s and 90s. During the last decade the demand for accommodation in the area has seen several prominent new developments spring up on former brown field sites. It may be still possible to grab a few ex-council bargains. 500 new flats, very smart flats apparently, are being built on the old waterworks land. The housing in Stroud Green is largely Victorian and Edwardian, although there was extensive bomb damage in parts from the Second World War and as a consequence, there was much post war council building, especially blocks. Stroud Green is more solid than spectacular. Property stock is largely composed of flat conversions.

Buyers:

Crouch End attracts a slightly younger crowd and there is a pronounced café society, with young mothers meeting for coffee. The area is popular with professionals who have young children. At present there is a happy mix of professionals and arty types of all ages.
