Summary:
Brixton is an inner-city suburb, about three miles central London and (with 24% of the population being of African and/or Caribbean descent) is the unofficial capital of the Jamaican, African British and Caribbean community. Until ten years ago, Brixton was a no-go area for most people, with memories of the infamous riots still fresh in people's minds. However, in the mid-nineties, SW2 re-invented itself as a trendy and fashionable area. Brixton has a character most similar to the downtown areas of a typical American city. It is noisy, lively and contains an incredible mix of people and culture. It has a real centre, a thriving market and a variety of places to eat, with a good nightlife. Brixton has an extensive selection of places to eat, such as: Bah Humbug, located in a crypt, which serves vegetarian food; Fujiyama offers Japanese noodles; the Satay Bar, a mix of Malaysian and Indonesian. One of the main draws to Brixton is the market, which offers a wide selection of African and Caribbean food. There are many clubs and live music venues, including the Brixton Academy, The Fridge and Mass. There is also an art house cinema, The Ritzy, which shows a range of films. Brixton prices are cheaper, while Herne/Tulse Hill range higher, especially for big houses near the stations. Overspill from Clapham/Kennington and growing fashion for the areas has also driven Brixton prices up.
Properties:
Victorian two and three story houses are plentiful in streets off the busy main roads. Trinity Square offers some attractive Georgian terraces, whilst the roads off Brixton Water Lane boast good size Victorian terraces. Larger Victorian houses can also be found close to Brockwell Park. There are a wide range of properties in Brixton, with rows of Victorian (and the odd Georgian) houses, some of real quality. Plenty of council build as well which often appear on the open market. Brixton is home to six big housing estates: Myatts Field off Vassall Road, Angell Town off Brixton Road on the boundary with Camberwell, Loughborough in the centre of Brixton, Moorlands Estate, situated off Coldharbour Lane, St Matthew's, located in the fork between Brixton Hill and Effra Road and Tulse Hill a little further South of St. Matthews. Flats are mostly conversions, (some spacious), some 30's blocks, new homes converted from old schools, etc. There is an increasing amount of new build. Tulse Hill and Herne Hill have Victorian/30s family homes often in quiet streets.
Buyers:
The most typical buyer in Brixton is someone who has rented there first and grown to love the area. There has been an influx of fashionable, young professionals, typically media and creative types, who have transformed the property market and pushed prices up. They also move here to swap flats in pricey areas for more spacious houses.
